/clear

Discard conversation history and start fresh, freeing all context tokens.

/clear throws away the current conversation and starts a new one. All context tokens from the old chat are freed immediately. Project memory (CLAUDE.md) is preserved.

Optional name

/clear [name] labels the conversation you are leaving. That label shows up in the /resume picker, so you can find the old thread later. Example: /clear checkout-tax-debug.

vs /compact and /resume

  • /compact shrinks history and stays in the same conversation.
  • /clear discards history and starts over.
  • /resume brings a previous conversation back with full history.

Use /clear when the current thread is done or too noisy to keep summarizing.
