Elasticsearch Fork, Apache 2.0 Licensed

OpenSearch 2.x+ is a community-driven fork of Elasticsearch, released under the Apache 2.0 license. It provides the same REST API, query DSL, and indexing engine that Magento expects — catalog search, layered navigation, and search suggestions all work without any code changes. Unlike Elasticsearch, there are no license restrictions on features or deployment models.

Memory Kept in Balance

OpenSearch runs on the JVM, and search speed depends on both the Java heap and the operating system's file cache that Lucene reads from. The platform sets the container's memory limit from the heap automatically, keeping half of it free for that file cache, so a larger catalog only needs one heap setting changed per environment, with no image rebuild.

Multilingual Search Plugins

Every environment ships with the ICU and phonetic analysis plugins installed. ICU handles Unicode-aware tokenizing and character folding across languages, and phonetic matching finds products even when a shopper misspells a name. Additional plugins for custom analyzers and relevance tuning can be added per environment and persist across restarts.

Single-Node Optimization

Each environment runs OpenSearch in single-node mode, optimized for per-environment isolation. This eliminates cluster coordination overhead — there is no master election, no shard rebalancing, and no split-brain risk. For a Magento store running in its own container stack, single-node mode provides the full search feature set with lower memory and CPU overhead than a multi-node cluster.
